Noli Me Tangere
Inspired by heraldic flags, this piece expresses a divide between me and my religious upbringing. The complexity of sexual contact versus spiritual union that I was taught in my youth was befouled with sexual assault by people I was raised to respect in the church. “Noli Me Tangere” means “touch me not.” Jesus Christ spoke these words to Mary Magdalene, severing the physical connection they had before his resurrection, insisting on a purely spiritual one. In depictions of this moment, Jesus is seen with a hand outstretched to a dismayed Mary, a symbol of rejection that I hold dearly in response to my religious family members. The flameworked glass mimics fringe, making a light twinkling sound when rustled.
