Nostalgia as Reflex

Memories of home aren’t always honest. This piece addresses the surreal nature of memory, taking the information we are comfortable with, and placing it in unfamiliar ways. If you could see yourself in the items that make up a home, would they reflect your memories? Or would you sink, footsteps sliding through the carpet, the floorboards, to the dirt beneath the home?

I hand drew this Turkish pattern based on memories of the rugs I grew up with from idealized tapestries of historic European decor. Printed onto mirrored glass, the negative space reflects the viewer’s gaze and the surrounding room, expanding the home in which it desires to exist.
